Young and promising band from Vienna/Austria improving what does mean: play extremal, play Metal. "The Command" CD contains above 30 minutes of death/rock'n'hellish metal with heavy/thrash magnificent guitars. It is a compilation of high quality metal ala Carcass ("Heartwork", "Swansong"; by the way Metzler has very similar voice to Jeff Walker) with rock'n'rollish touches of Motorhead, The Crown (not completely and not only rock'n'rollish: hope you know what I mean) and so on. I am impressing with their so powerful so hard sound! It is really very good, remembering they recorded "The Command" in their homestudio (beside drum which was recorded in professional studio of their friend). Surely it is very good debut and I hope (I'm even sure!) that Defender KFS very soon fuse, indeed. This band kicks ass in a quality way (hehehe). Hey labels, what are you waiting for?!?

Although the band considers this release as a Demo-Cd (which if we analyse is indeed!!) I found more effective to review it in this section, since it has all the elements to be considered a professional album or mini album... you decide. So, Defender KFS (what the fuck does KFS mean??) is a very young band seeking their own identity. I can’t say that they have found it with "The Command" but it’s a good step for that. There are a lot of things to be developed, like the drums for instance (they are also a bit too high on the final mix and there are times in which it is a bit difficult to identify clearly the rest of the instruments). The production is not by far the necessary (but for a Demo that it is, it’s really good) but the special raw feeling around it and the rock’n’rollish vibe gives a good touch to their songs. The vocals of Metzler are a combination of the Thrash attack with some death growls, sometimes sounding like some Swedish death Metal acts. All in all, a good release but nothing truly special... still keep in mind these Austrian guys.

War Metal aus Österreich? Das gibt´s auch? Muss es wohl, ansonsten würde ich hier nicht über Defender KFS schreiben, die uns mit "The Command" einen guten Silberling vor die Latte knallen. Beeindruckend ist auf der ersten Blick schon die grafsche Gestaltung (nichts zerpixelt, sehr schönes Layout), weshalb schon zu diesem Zeitpunkt die Daumen meilenweit nach oben zeigen. Daß dies aber noch lange keine Garantie für geile Mucke ist, dürfte klar sein. Aber Defender KFS wissen mächtig zu rocken und bieten auf insgesamt 9 Songs die Vollbedienung schlechthin. Bei War Metal denkt man immer automatisch an Goddess of Desire, die ich an manchen Stellen auch als Vergleich heranziehen würde!

I’m calling it a demo as the band released it themselves but at the same time. You do get 8 tracks plus an outro to sink you razor sharp, crimson stained metallic teeth into. Defender KFS play heavy and aggressive deathrash integrated with a heavy dose of melodicism. I think they could be enjoyed by the brutal fans, as well as the melodic gothenburg types. Both are amalgamated quite equally and masterfully. They have a knack for memorable riffs intertwined with structuring tidbits. Metzler’s vocals are kind of dark obscure semi-decipherable growl/screams that fit to the songs. There are flittering appearances of keys (Drop these guys they do nothing to enhance your music!) and sound samples (rain etc.)

Im Germansprachigen Hartmetall-Underground brodelts zur Zeit wieder heftig. Mit Defenders KFS ist mir eine der vielversprechendsten Frischfleisch(er)linge ins Netz gegangen. Die Mannen haben sich dem melodischen Deathmetal, mit starker Anlehnung an den "traditionellen" Metal - besonders im Leadgitarrenbereich - verschrieben. Äusserst feine Sache, das hier! Der Sound ist, produktionsbedingt relativ matschig - was wir aber gekonnt überhört haben wollen. Ansonsten super Melodien und im Midtempobereich angesiedeltes Drumming. Der melodische und aggressive Gesang des Frontmannes, passt gut in das übrige Geschehen(trotz teilweise falschem Timing). Also, auf zu den Hallen von Feuer("Halls of Fire"). Von diesen Herren wird man bald noch mehr hören - hoffe ich!

Wie ich gehört habe, bezeichnen die Burschen von DEFENDER KFS ihren eigenen Musikstil als War-Metal. Krieg für Eure Ohren bedeutet diese Scheibe dennoch nicht. Im Gegenteil, sie verwöhnen die kritischen Metal-Ohren mit einem Stil, der an alte, klassische Speed/Thrash-Legenden erinnert. Vorbilder von DEFENDER KFS dürften - es folgt eine Einschätzung von mir - alte METALLICA oder SLAYER Nummern sein, was man in ihrem kraftvollen Mix aus Power und geschickt eingebauten Gitarrensoli erkennen kann. Zusätzlich wird einem von Sänger Metzler teilweise ordentliches Gegrunze geboten, was den Songs dann eine eigene Note verleiht.
Etwas in eine andere Richtung geht meiner Meinung nach der vierte Song "The Sign Of Hell". Durch die Schnelligkeit, den Gitarrensound, die dadurch entstehende Härte und das Gegrunze fühle ich mich richtig in mein Musikmetier versetzt. Denn ich höre gerne den skandinavischen Melodic-Death a la IN FLAMES. Ich finde, dass DEFENDER KFS auch manchmal in diese Richtung abdriften.
Je öfter ich mir die Scheibe anhöre, desto mehr komme ich drauf, warum sie "War-Metal" zu ihrer Musik sagen. Im Krieg geht es auch um Aggressivität, und aggressive Musik geben die vier allemal von sich.

Was die Wiener Kapelle, die sich selbst als War Metal definiert, mit diesem Silberling hier vorlegt ist eine wahre Freude für Freund des melodisch, schnell-aggressiven Death Metals mit thrashigen Einflüssen. Frisch und munter fiedeln sich die Burschen hier in bester skandinavischer Manier durch die etwas über 30 Minuten lange 8 Track Scheibe. Daß sie damit auch ausgerechnet bei mir auf offenen Ohren stoßen steht außer Frage, der sound ist recht heftig und vor allem umso mehr, wenn man in beiliegendem info liest, daß das Ganze bis auf die Drumspuren im eigenen Homestudio zusammengebastelt wurde. Aggressive Vocals treffen auf ein treibendes Drumming, welches sich mit fidelen Melodiebögen und Gitarrenlinien paart und sich insgesamt auf recht hohem niveau bewegt. Was soll ich sagen? Ich bin wunschlos glücklich mit dieser Scheibe in meinem Player und ich denke vielen von euch wird es ähnlich gehen. Hört nur mal den Song auf der aktuellen Eternity CD an und sichert euch dieses Schmuckstück für 15 DM.

Well. It is 38 minutes past midnight, just the right time for reviewing this piece of metal. It is raining and thundering outside (for the first time in this year-SIGN!!!???). ghrmm. Lets begin with CD layout and artwork. Two words: great done, I mean really professional work. Some labels could learn something here. Hehe. Now, let's go with the first song "North man salvation". I start to listen. HM... Well, I guess I was expecting something different from these guys. What I get is really melodic sound. It reminds me on some combination of Dark tranquillity's "Skydancer" and In flames "Whoracle". Mid pieced tempo, blackened vocals, pretty understandable, melodic guitar riffs. Anyway I like what I hear. Maybe production could be a bit clearer, I mean you can hear all instruments playing, on some strange way, but what can we do... "Halls of fame" is the name of second song by these Defenders of fate. I just must say, here I fell some Amorphis influences, and I really do. Raw vocals, some folky tunes in background… Nice, deserve to be hard again. (I pushed "Previous track" button) Lets continue. The third song, "Cold mind war" begins with clear guitar tune. Is this some kind of ballad? HM, nooooo. This is one of fastest songs on CD, which already makes it one of my favorites. He he. There are also some fast parts and on track 8, "Labyrinths of you", but that is not my type of heaviness. After "Cold mind war", show goes the same way it had begun. Blackened and sometimes growling vocals, melodic guitar with some background solos, mid tempo drumming. The usual formula for this genre. In all songs you can fell some rocking riffs. Now, I am jumping to track 7 "the command". This one is the heaviest song here. But also it has too much rock influenced riffs inside. Hej, What 'em I talking about heavy, rock, this is death metal dude, death metal, at least I think. What else can I say? Nothing new is brought here, but I think it is better that way. I mean some bands putting some stupid flute, and other non-metal instruments into their music, and they think that they are unique; they made something new so they start labeling their music by some shity genres. I say SUCK IT BABY, you made shit. That is not metal. THIS IS METAL: Defender. Lets get serious now, OK. When I listen this CD I have feeling that all this is one song. One good structured, catchy, not hard to get into it, song, so think that this CD deserves to be heard. If you are fan of this, let's call it melodic black death metal type of music, then use one dose of this, so you can refresh yourself a bit. I COMMAND you.

Melodic Death Thrash act coming from Vienna, the band presents us their debut album, good production and good compositions here. The special mark of DEFENDER KFS music is the guitars (played by Gre Gore - vacalist too), it is very melodic in some moments and the riffs demostrate a complete compreeension of the death metal structures (some soles remember IN FLAMES & AT THE GATES). Gore is a good vocalist too and your vocals are deep cavernous nightmares. Tracks like "Cold (Mind War)", "The Command"& "Labyrinth Of You" will leave any lover of the melodic death metal animated and impressed. DEFENDER KFS is a good surprise.

...DEFENDER KFS ebenfalls aus der Bundeshauptstadt, spielen laut Eigendefinition War Metal, was im Endeffekt ziemlich melodisch und schwedisch klingt. Der in Eigenregie produzierte Thrash/Death-Bastard "The Command" kann locker Overground Combos mithalten und rotierte wochenlang in meinem Player. Live geht die Chose sogar noch besser (und im kultigen War Paint) ab! Für 15.- DM ist das Teil schon fast geschenkt...

Play it loud, steht unübersehbar auf der CD der Ösis. Haben die Herren aus dem Musikantenstadel aber noch etwas vergessen, "and don`t forget the beer", hätte auch noch dazu gehört. Na egal, es geht auch ohne. Also, die Band mit dem seltsamen Namen kommt aus Österreich, legt hier und jetzt ihren ersten Silberling vor, der es bei 9 Titeln auf 32 min. und ein paar Sekunden Laufzeit bringt. Musikalisch gibt es feinstes Gedresche, das beim Gesang eine gewisse Tendenz zum Death Metal nicht verhehlen kann. Einen Preis für besonders herausragende Originalität wird die Band nicht bekommen, was aber auch egal ist. Metal kann anspruchsvoll, Filigran und sonst was sein, dagegen spricht nichts. Aber der einzige und wahre Metal ist der, bei dem die Nackenmuskeln permanent die Friedensfahne hissen und um Gnade flehen. Knochenbrecher sind Defender KFS allemal. Ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste, wird hier der richtige Soundtrack für jeden standesbewussten Mattenschwinger zu Gehör gebracht. So muß das sein und nicht anders. Trotz alledem und dessen, bauen die Jungs auch ein paar Melodiebogen mit ein, damit die ganze nicht all zu langweilig wird. Himmel, wie soll ich hier was vernünftiges zusammenschreiben, wenn ich permanent vorm PC bange? Kurze neune und Schluß. Besorgt euch das Ding, evtl. noch `ne Kiste lecker Gösser Bier und nächsten Samstag ist Fete, bis der Notarzt kommt.

Brutal-melodic death-metal. Finest mixture of miscellaneous subspecies Swedish death-metal. Tunes and atmosphere as for Gates Of Ishtar, aggressiveness and gravity from Amon Amarth, high engineering and potent voice. But not shouting as for many Swedish gangs, and grawling. Well, basically, all also is said... What here even to add? Very much aggressively, qualitatively also is melodious. The stuff of this Austrian group interesting and impressive, is a pity only short... Sometimes overshoot the remarkable moments, after which one on mind there comes the term war-batalic metal. Militant death-metal. Necessarily album should like the fans melodic death metal.

Ich glaube, die österreichische Kampfmaschine DEFENDER KFS hat sich aufgrund zahlreicher Liveauftritte schon eine ziemlich große Fangemeinde erarbeiten können, daher bedarf es hier wohl keiner großartigen Vorstellung der Mannen um Mastermind und Gitarrist Gore.

Nun, die Wiener definieren ihren Stil als "War Metal", worunter sich der Laie eine Mixtur aus melodisch-aggressiven Death Metal, Thrash Metal und einem Schuss True Metal der Marke IRON MAIDEN vorstellen kann - ziemlich komplex ist das ganze auf jeden Fall. Das ist auch das Problem bei "The command". Logischerweise kann man auf einem Debüt keine 100.000 Dollar Produktion erwarten, aber für derart komplizierte, anspruchsvolle und komplexe Songstrukturen ist einfach eine bessere Produktion notwendig, damit das Zeug auf CD genau so aggressiv und gut rüber kommt, wie es die Wiener schon live bewiesen haben. Ich will der Band jetzt nicht unterstellen, dass der Sound schlecht wäre, nein – das ist er ganz und gar nicht, aber für meine Begriffe kommen die Songs auf "The command" um einen Tick schlechter und dünner rüber, als live.

DEFENDER KFS rocken sich auf ihrem Debüt durch 8 Songs plus Outro, bestechen vor allem durch hervorragende Arbeit in der Leadguitar-Sektion, aber auch der Rest der Partie (zum damaligen Zeitpunkt: Metzler-Vocals / Hate Machine-Bass / Beisser-drums und eben Gore an der Gitarre) wissen absolut zu überzeugen. Da auch das Layout qualitativ hochwertig und hervorragend ist, gibt es eigentlich für ein Debüt keine Beschwerden zu vermelden - und sollte man die Line Up Probleme gelöst haben und es finanziell schaffen, nächstes Mal eine um einen Tick bessere Produktion darbieten zu können, denke ich, steht einem Labeldeal nichts mehr im Wege.

Bis dahin sei allen Freunden oben genannter Musikstile "The command" wärmstens empfohlen, denn wer - wie jeder wahre Metaller - mit einem Panzer fährt, braucht das in seiner Anlage...

We can say the band did it ok, bearing in mind that this is just and album debut. Of course, this isn't a super amazing, awesome or great album, but we liked it. The Command is characterized for having some death metal sounds, not of the most extreme though, besides some of both heavy and thrash metal touches and it's technical and melodic too. It has a considerable amount of good riffs which you'll enjoy for sure if you like this kind of style. Defender KFS has released this album, which in our way of thinking, must be listened with some cold beers and mosh. Moreover, we think if they gave a little harder touch to their music, then this would sound a little better too, mainly because sometimes it becomes too much melodic. The Command is an independent release and its sound is pretty good. In general, this is good stuff, the effort was worth.

DEFENDER KFS bezeichnen sich selber als "War Metal" und mir waren mit dieser Bezeichnung bisher nur Bands wie IN BATTLE oder NIDEN DIV. 187 bekannt, aber mit derartigen Combos haben die Wiener recht wenig gemein. Den Stil könnte man schon eher mit Bands wie AMON AMARTH und DISMEMBER mit verstärktem IRON MAIDEN-Background bezeichnen. Die in DEFENDER KFS involvierten Musiker haben ihre Fähigkeiten seit Mitte der Neunziger in Bands wie PENDRAGON, JORMUNDGAND oder CRYOSPHERE versiert und können mit einem für Undergroundbands recht hohen musikalischen Potential durchaus überzeugen. Soundmäßig ist "The command" für eine Eigenproduktion ebenfalls recht gut geraten, gerade einmal der etwas übersteuert wirkende Gesang und daß die Musik ein wenig hintergründig erscheint, lassen eine kleine Kritik zu. Ansonsten ist dieses Werk allen, die auf eher schwedischen Death Metal (NICHT Götheborg-Metal) stehen, zu empfehlen.

Ok, firstly I considered these guys to be of Australian origin, however I doubt if an act named "Defender KFS" would ever emerge from the Down Under. So let's better concentrate our attention on this one, coming from Austria. In fact, I don't know that much concerning the Austrian metal scene, and when it comes to black metal, there're only few bands I'm acquainted with (such as BELPHEGOR, for instance). Actually, this is sort of pleasant acquaintance. I mean, the one I've just had, putting uot;The Command" into my CD player. Reminding a bit of USA's DAWNBRINGER (especially when it comes to vocals - it seems like, these two bands have one and only drawback - vocal lines), it still sounds different, at least if we'd compare 'em to the greatest multitude of neophyte death / black / doom / gothic / heavy / power / speed / industrial / core metal bands out there. Based on incredibly well crafted and adjusted harmonies and melodic structures, supplemented with semi-grunts / semi-whisperings / semi-black metallish vokills (as I already said, the worst this CD has to offer - not as isgusting as in case with DAWNBRINGER, though) and plenty of leads, as well as thick and enjoyable sound execution, it strikes as "The Command" would be a worthy addition to your collection, standing somewhere between blackened heavy / death metal. This is seemingly satanic stuff, by the way, if we'd refer to the lyrical canvas. RECOMMENDED.
